What it's good for, and what it isn't

A vigorous, arching butterfly bush that swaps the usual purple for yellow, apricot or yellow and lilac scented flowers packed into ball-shaped clusters, from early summer until frost, always busy with butterflies and bees. Give it full sun and sharp drainage, because wet soil in winter harms it more than cold does. Cut it back hard every spring: it also flowers on the new shoots, so it recovers well after winter dieback. It sets far less seed than the common butterfly bush, but it is still worth cutting off the spent flower heads.

Watch out for
One of the least hardy butterfly bushes: in hard Central European winters the top growth often dies back to the ground, but the rootstock usually resprouts, especially in a sheltered spot with a winter mulch over the crown. Wet, poorly drained soil can kill it in winter, and in shade it grows lanky and hardly flowers. The stamens of the hybrid are reduced and it sets little or no seed, so it is generally not regarded as a spreading plant; with a common butterfly bush (Buddleja davidii) flowering nearby it can still produce viable seed, so cut off the spent flower heads. One parent, Buddleja davidii, is on official invasive lists in several nearby countries, while the hybrid itself is on none of them. Aphids and spider mites turn up occasionally.
