What it's good for, and what it isn't

A bushy perennial with grey, felted leaves that carries small, yellow-centred, white papery flower heads from midsummer into autumn; they are lovely cut or dried and keep for a long time. Unlike most grey-leaved plants it does not want drought: it is happiest in moist, humus-rich but well-drained soil, and it wilts and loses its lower leaves quickly when it dries out. It forms a tidy, slowly widening clump and grows in sun or part shade.

Watch out for
In the hot, dry summers of Central Europe it wilts quickly without watering and the foliage turns shabby, so plant it in moist soil or an irrigated bed. It dislikes standing wet in winter. Caterpillars may chew the leaves; it has no serious diseases.
