Carex muskingumensis
Palm sedge (Carex muskingumensis) is an ornamental grass. Light: full sun, part shade. Hardy down to -34 °C. Drought tolerance: low. Sold in local shops from about €3.90.
An unusual-looking sedge: the narrow, light green leaves stand in whorls along stiff, upright stems like the fronds of a tiny palm or papyrus, so it gives a tropical feel even in a small space. It belongs in moist or wet soil in sun or part shade: pond edges, rain gardens, boggy corners, even a few centimetres of shallow water, and with regular watering it also grows in a border or a tub as long as the soil never dries out. It is deciduous and turns yellow after frost: cut it to the ground in late winter, and expect it to spread slowly by rhizomes and to seed around.
