What it's good for, and what it isn't

A bold foliage plant for moist part shade, with large, horse-chestnut-like, bronze-tinted leaves and pink flower plumes in early summer. Plant it by a pond or stream or in humus-rich soil that never dries out, sheltered from wind. It is slow to get going, and the leaf edges turn brown if the soil dries out or it stands in strong sun.

Watch out for
In the hot, dry summers of Central Europe the leaves scorch in strong sun, drying wind and soil that dries out, so it needs a shadier spot that can be watered. Slugs may damage the young leaves. It grows slowly for the first few years after planting.
