What it's good for, and what it isn't

A low succulent perennial: stems arch out from one point like spokes, carrying round, blue-grey, pink-edged leaves in threes, and pink starry flowers open at the stem tips in late September and October, when the foliage also flushes pink and orange. It looks good in pots, stone troughs, on top of a retaining wall and in the rock garden, where the shoots can hang down. Give it sun and lean, very free-draining soil and it needs hardly any watering; it dies back for winter and resprouts from the crown in spring.

Watch out for
In wet, heavy soil, especially in winter, the crown and roots rot: plant it only where drainage is good or in a container filled with gritty compost, and do not overwater. In shade it stretches and falls open. Slugs and snails eat the young shoots, and aphids and mealybugs also turn up. It flowers late, so in a cool autumn with early frost the display can fail or be brief; in a pot the root ball can freeze through, so protect the container in a dry winter without snow.
