Dryopteris filix-mas
Male fern (Dryopteris filix-mas) is a perennial that reaches 1 m × 90 cm after ten years. Light: part shade, shade. Hardy down to -34 °C. Drought tolerance: medium. Toxic to children. Sold in local shops from about €8.
A large, shuttlecock-shaped woodland fern that also grows wild in the region, and one of the least demanding ferns for shade and part shade. Use it under trees and shrubs or by a north wall; it looks best in moist, humus-rich soil but puts up with drier shade once established. The fronds die back for winter and are cut off in spring; the rhizome is poisonous.
