What it's good for, and what it isn't

A perennial that flowers from late summer into autumn, when most borders are winding down: white or pink blooms float on slender stems and look best in part shade. It wants moist, humus-rich soil and its leaves scorch where the ground dries out in full sun. It is slow to settle in, but once established it spreads steadily by its roots, so give it room.

Watch out for
In the hot, dry summers of Central Europe the foliage burns in full sun and the plant declines without watering. It does not tolerate waterlogged soil in winter. Leaf spot, powdery and downy mildew, nematodes and slugs occur occasionally, and tall cultivars may need staking in windy spots. Once established it spreads strongly and resprouts from root pieces left in the ground.
