What it's good for, and what it isn't

Its large, corrugated blue-green leaves fill shady borders nicely, and it also works as a specimen or in a large container. Give it humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil and water during dry spells. Its thick leaves resist slugs better than many hostas, but they are not immune, and the foliage dies back for winter.

Watch out for
Slugs and snails can still damage the thick leaves, especially young shoots; vine weevil larvae can also be troublesome in containers. Hot afternoon sun and drying soil can cause leaf scorch and brown margins. Winter waterlogging can cause root rot, and late frost can damage newly emerging leaves. Viral infections are also possible.
