What it's good for, and what it isn't

A huge park tree with deep shade and upright white flower candles in May that bees readily visit. It suits only a really large garden with moist, deep soil: it copes badly with drought and with heat between paved surfaces, and its foliage usually turns brown by midsummer. In autumn it drops plenty of spiny husks and conkers, and the seeds are poisonous, so do not confuse them with edible sweet chestnuts.

Watch out for
In Central Europe the horse chestnut leaf miner (Cameraria ohridella) attacks almost every tree: the mines of the caterpillars turn the foliage brown by July or August and it drops early, year after year. The tree rarely dies from this, but it looks poor in the second half of summer and repeated defoliation weakens it. Collecting and destroying all fallen leaves in autumn reduces the damage (the pupae overwinter in the litter); trunk injection and spraying are jobs for a professional. On top of this come fungal leaf blotch (Guignardia), powdery mildew and, in drought or in hot paved sites, scorched leaf edges. Bleeding canker (Pseudomonas syringae pv. aesculi) is spreading in several parts of Europe; it causes dark sticky ooze on the trunk and can kill branches or the whole tree. It is sensitive to de-icing salt. If clean summer foliage matters to you, choose the red horse chestnut or another shade tree for new planting.
