What it's good for, and what it isn't

The toughest and earliest of the Japanese-type anemones: pale pink flowers float on thin stems above vine-like leaves from late summer into autumn. It looks best in part shade and humus-rich soil that does not dry out in summer. It is slow for the first years but then spreads strongly by its roots, so give it room or pull back the runners regularly.

Watch out for
Once established it forms large colonies by creeping roots and can swamp weaker neighbours; it resprouts from root pieces left in the soil. In the hot, dry summers of Central Europe the foliage scorches in strong sun and dry soil. It does not tolerate waterlogged soil in winter. Powdery mildew, leaf spot and rust can occur, slugs and caterpillars may feed on it, and tall stems may flop.
