Rudbeckia hirta
Gloriosa daisy (Rudbeckia hirta) is a perennial. Light: full sun. Hardy down to -40 °C. Drought tolerance: medium. Sold in local shops from about €9.
A fast-growing, bristly-leaved coneflower with large golden yellow, orange, rusty red or two-tone flowers around a dark centre, which open in the very year of sowing, from early summer until frost. It is short-lived: it usually disappears after one or two seasons, so treat it as an annual or biennial and either let it seed around or sow and plant afresh each spring. That is how it differs from the long-lived orange coneflower, which creeps by rhizomes into a wider clump each year and has smaller flowers but stays in the same place for many years.
