What it's good for, and what it isn't

A huge, spreading tree that lives for centuries, worth planting for its roasting chestnuts and deep shade, but only where there is real room: in time it reaches 20 to 30 metres tall and 10 to 20 metres wide. For a reliable crop plant at least two different cultivars or seedlings near each other, because a single tree sets very few nuts with its own pollen. It only stays healthy in lime-free, acidic to neutral, well-drained soil; on chalky ground it turns yellow and declines within a few years. The spiny husks and large leaves mean a lot of sweeping in autumn, and the scent of the summer catkins is strong and unpleasant to many people.

Watch out for
Its most serious disease is chestnut blight (Cryphonectria parasitica): the fungus enters through bark wounds and causes sunken, orange-red, cracking cankers above which branches or the whole crown die. It is present throughout Central Europe, and many infected trees die within years or survive only as regrowth from the base, so avoid bark injuries, cut diseased limbs back to healthy wood and buy grafted trees from a reliable source. The other big limitation is soil: the species does not tolerate lime, and on chalky, alkaline, heavy or waterlogged ground it suffers iron chlorosis and then ink disease (Phytophthora root rot), while in hot, dry lowland sites it struggles without watering. In recent years the oriental chestnut gall wasp has also arrived in the region; its galls on buds and leaves sharply reduce shoot growth and cropping. Chestnut weevil and chestnut moth larvae can spoil the nuts.
