Salvia greggii
Autumn sage (Salvia greggii) is a perennial that reaches 75 cm × 75 cm after ten years. Light: full sun. Hardy down to -15 °C. Drought tolerance: high.
A small-leaved, aromatic subshrub that carries red, pink, white or purple lipped flowers from early summer until frost and copes very well with heat and drought. Nurseries sell it together with the very similar baby sage and the hybrids between the two (the two-tone red and white kinds belong here), often mixed up, and their needs and hardiness are essentially the same. It is only borderline hardy: plant it in spring in a sheltered, sunny spot by a warm wall, in lean, gritty soil that drains freely, mulch the base for winter and cut it back only in spring, or grow it in a pot and overwinter it somewhere bright and frost-free.
