Dianthus plumarius
Cottage pink (Dianthus plumarius) is a perennial that reaches 30 cm × 50 cm after ten years. Light: full sun. Hardy down to -40 °C. Drought tolerance: medium. Mildly toxic to dogs and cats. Sold in local shops from about CZK 49.
An old cottage garden favourite: its grey, grassy leaves form a dense cushion all year, and in early summer it is covered in fringed, clove-scented pink, white or red flowers. Give it full sun and lean, limy or neutral soil that drains very freely, at the front of a border, in a rock garden or on top of a retaining wall; it cannot stand sitting wet in winter. After a few years the clump goes bare and thin in the middle, so it pays to renew it from cuttings in summer.
