What it's good for, and what it isn't

From a rosette of broad, leathery leaves it sends up wiry, much-branched stems in midsummer that carry a cloud of tiny lavender-blue flowers, excellent for cutting and drying. Plant it in full sun and dry, free-draining (even sandy or salty) soil, where it copes well with heat and drought. Its deep taproot resents moving and dividing, so put it straight into its permanent place.

Watch out for
Crown and root rot can set in on heavy, wet soil, so give it an airy spot with good drainage. In heavy soil the tall flower stems may flop.
