Persicaria amplexicaulis
Red bistort (Persicaria amplexicaulis) is a perennial that reaches 1.2 m × 1.2 m after ten years. Light: full sun, part shade. Hardy down to -34 °C. Drought tolerance: low. Sold in local shops from about €6.
Red bistort is one of the longest-flowering perennials: from early summer until the frosts its dense, leafy mound keeps producing slender spikes of red (or, depending on the cultivar, pink or white) flowers that are alive with pollinators. It is worth knowing that it is not the same thing as the aggressively spreading giant knotweeds: this is a well-behaved, clump-forming garden plant whose clump widens only slowly, though it does need a good metre of space when mature. It looks best in sun or part shade in moist soil and dislikes drying out.
