Sporobolus heterolepis
Prairie dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepis) is an ornamental grass that reaches 80 cm × 75 cm after ten years. Light: full sun, part shade. Hardy down to -40 °C. Drought tolerance: high.
Prairie dropseed is one of the finest North American prairie grasses: its hair-fine, glossy green leaves form a dense, arching mound, and in late summer and autumn airy pinkish-brown flower sprays float above it with a pleasant scent often likened to buttered popcorn. It turns orange in autumn and stands up to snow, so it stays attractive through winter, and it suits sunny, dry borders, prairie-style plantings, gravel gardens and mass planting as a ground cover. It is slow to settle in, so give it room and keep weeds down for the first two or three years; after that it is a long-lived, tough grass that copes with drought and with heavy or limy soil.
