What it's good for, and what it isn't

A dense, many-stemmed shrub with glossy leaves that carries vivid orange-red flowers through summer and turns yellow in autumn. It is self-fertile, so a single plant will fruit, but the fruit only ripens properly after a long, hot summer and a warm autumn. Give it the warmest, most sheltered sunny corner in loose, free-draining soil; it shrugs off drought but not prolonged frost.

Watch out for
In Central Europe it can only be trusted in the ground in the warmest, sheltered sites. The shoots of most varieties are damaged below about -10 to -12 °C, and in colder winters the plant is killed to the ground; it usually resprouts from the roots but will not fruit that year. Hardier varieties take around -15 °C, or briefly more, with protection. Mulch the base thickly with leaves for winter and wrap young bushes in fleece, or in colder areas grow it in a tub and overwinter it frost-free. After a cool, short summer the fruit does not ripen.
