Syringa patula
Manchurian lilac (Syringa patula) is a shrub. Light: full sun, part shade. Hardy down to -34 °C. Drought tolerance: medium. Sold in local shops from about €30.
A dense, slow-growing, compact lilac that flowers after the common lilac, in late spring to early summer: purple buds open to pale lavender, strongly scented panicles, and the leaves turn burgundy in autumn. It fits small gardens, is happy on limy soil and resists powdery mildew far better than other lilacs. Plant it in sun in well-drained soil, and if it needs pruning, do it straight after flowering because it blooms on last year's wood.
