Heuchera × hybrida
Heuchera (Heuchera × hybrida) is a perennial. Light: part shade. Hardy down to -34 °C. Drought tolerance: low. Non-toxic to dogs, cats and children. Sold in local shops from about €3.80.
Coral bells are grown mainly for their low mound of lobed leaves, which stays decorative almost all year: cultivars come in deep purple to near black, lime green, amber and peach, silver-veined or plain green, with thin stems of tiny white, pink or red bells above in summer. They do best in part shade in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil: dark-leaved forms take more sun, while pale ones (lime, yellow, peach) scorch in strong sun, so match the spot to the leaf colour. They are not long-lived: the crown turns woody and lifts out of the soil, so divide and replant deeper every 3 to 4 years.
