What it's good for, and what it isn't

A late-spring bulb that carries starry blue, purple or creamy white flowers on waist-high stems, just in the gap between tulips and the summer perennials. Unlike most bulbs it copes with heavy soil that is moist in spring, and it naturalises well in grass that is not mown until midsummer. Plant the bulbs in autumn, at least a dozen in a group, where it does not matter that the leaves die back in early summer.
