What it's good for, and what it isn't

A broad, multi-stemmed large shrub that is decorated with yellow catkins at the end of winter and bears hazelnuts in autumn; excellent for natural-looking screening and wildlife-friendly gardens. Do not plant just one if you want nuts: hazel is wind pollinated and sets few or no nuts with its own pollen, so grow two different varieties or seedlings close to each other. It keeps sending up shoots from the base and grows into a wide thicket, so allow it at least four metres, and the pollen from its catkins is a strong allergen.

Watch out for
In Central Europe hazel is the first major pollen allergen of the year: in mild winters it sheds pollen as early as January, typically between February and March, so do not plant it close to the home of someone with a pollen allergy. Suckers from the base need removing regularly or it turns into an impenetrable thicket. Squirrels, mice and birds can take most of the crop, and hard frost can damage the catkins and early flowers. Hazelnuts are a common food allergen.
