What it's good for, and what it isn't

An evergreen shrub with arching branches, mostly sold in forms with burgundy or bronze leaves and vivid pink flowers; the lightly scented early spring flowers have narrow, ribbon-like petals like those of witch hazel. It needs acidic, humus-rich, well-drained soil and a spot in part shade or sun that is sheltered from wind. It is only moderately frost hardy, so it is safest in a container that spends the winter frost-free; in the ground plant it only in a sheltered corner, in spring, and cover it for winter.

We do not recommend this plant

Watch out for
In Central Europe its winter hardiness is borderline: it is reliable only down to about -10 to -12 °C and young plants can already be damaged at -6 to -7 °C, so plants in the ground may be cut back or killed in a harder winter even with protection. It is safe as a container plant overwintered in a cool, bright, frost-free place; planting out is worth trying only in the mildest urban spots, by a wall and sheltered from wind, with a thick mulch and a winter cover. In neutral or limy soil the leaves turn yellow (iron chlorosis), so it needs acidic compost and soft water. Root rot can occur in heavy, poorly drained soil.
