What it's good for, and what it isn't

The upright autumn stonecrops sold by cultivar name: clumps of fleshy stems and leaves that carry flat flower heads from late summer to late autumn, crowded with butterflies and bees, and brown seed heads that stand through winter. Cultivars differ mainly in height (roughly 30 to 75 cm) and in foliage, which may be green, grey or dark purple, with flowers from pale pink to deep red, so check those two things when choosing. Give them full sun and lean, well-drained soil, because in rich ground or shade they stretch and flop open.

Watch out for
In rich, irrigated soil or part shade the taller cultivars grow lanky and the clump splits open in the middle; cutting the stems back by half in late May helps. In heavy, waterlogged soil the crown and roots rot, mostly in winter. Slugs, snails and vine weevil grubs can damage it, and powdery mildew may appear on very dry sites.
