What it's good for, and what it isn't

A low evergreen subshrub with small, glossy, scalloped leaves that look like tiny oak leaves, and pinkish purple lipped flowers in summer that bees love. It is happiest in a dry, sunny, limy or stony spot and works in rock gardens, at the front of a border, as ground cover or as a low clipped edging. Make sure the soil drains well and shear it after flowering, otherwise it gets floppy and bare.

Watch out for
In waterlogged, heavy soil and in wet winters the roots can rot and shoots die back, which leaves gaps in a clipped edging. Powdery mildew, leaf spot, rust and mites turn up now and then but are rarely serious. The spent flower spikes look untidy, so cut it back after flowering.
