Chelone obliqua
Turtlehead (Chelone obliqua) is a perennial that reaches 90 cm × 60 cm after ten years. Light: full sun, part shade. Hardy down to -29 °C. Drought tolerance: low. Sold in local shops from about HUF 1,200.
A stiffly upright perennial that flowers in late summer and autumn when little else does, with pink to purplish, turtle-head shaped blooms at the stem tips. It is happy only in rich soil that never dries out, so plant it beside a pond, in a low spot or in a bed you water regularly. Mulch it in full sun, and expect it to stretch and need support in deep shade.
