Helenium × hybridum
Sneezeweed (Helenium × hybridum) is a perennial that reaches 1 m × 60 cm after ten years. Light: full sun. Hardy down to -34 °C. Drought tolerance: low. Toxic to children. Sold in local shops from about HUF 1,400.
Garden heleniums are upright, clump-forming perennials that pour out yellow, orange, copper-red and brownish-red daisies with a domed centre from midsummer into autumn, much loved by bees and butterflies. They belong in sun and in rich soil that does not dry out in summer: in dry ground they lose their lower leaves and flower poorly, so water in drought. Cultivars differ a lot: some are 60 cm and stand without support, others reach 150 cm and need staking, and the start of flowering differs by weeks between cultivars (July to August), so always check height and season. Taller ones can be cut back in early June, a good six weeks before flowering, to make them shorter and bushier, and the clumps should be divided every three to four years.
