Cryptomeria japonica
Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) is a small tree that reaches 3 m × 1.5 m after ten years. Light: full sun, part shade. Hardy down to -23 °C. Drought tolerance: low. Sold in local shops from about HUF 6,200.
An evergreen with soft, feathery foliage and reddish-brown peeling bark, at its best as a specimen or in a Japanese-style garden. Gardens grow its cultivars: these reach about 3 metres in ten years and 2 to 9 metres in time, the dwarf globes only 1 to 2 metres, a fraction of the 40 to 50 metre forest tree of its homeland. It wants acidic to neutral, humus-rich soil that never dries out yet drains well, and a humid spot sheltered from wind; on many cultivars the foliage turns bronze in winter and greens up again in spring.
