What it's good for, and what it isn't

A low perennial with hairy leaf rosettes and wiry stems that carry small rose-like flowers in orange, red, yellow or apricot for weeks: one of the longest-flowering fillers for the front of a border. It wants soil that stays moist yet drains well, with afternoon shade where summers are hot, because the leaves brown in blazing sun and drought. Cultivars differ mainly in height (30 to 75 cm), in how double the flowers are, and in whether they are sterile, long-blooming hybrids or older seed-raised, shorter-lived kinds; divide the clumps every two or three years, otherwise the centre goes bare and the plant dies out.

Watch out for

The usual failure in Central Europe is the hot, dry summer: leaves scorch and brown, and the weakened plant attracts spider mites and powdery mildew. The other danger is standing water in winter, which rots the crown, so it is short-lived in heavy clay. Without division it wears out in a few years. Less often leaf spots, downy mildew, geum sawfly larvae and leaf miners do damage.
