What it's good for, and what it isn't

One of the longest flowering asters: its lavender-blue daisies with yellow centres keep coming from midsummer to late autumn, and butterflies and bees love them. It is not prone to mildew and stands without staking in lean, well drained soil. Plant it in spring in a sunny spot, away from anywhere water collects in winter.

Watch out for
It is sensitive to winter wet: the crown rots in heavy, wet soil, and in colder, snowless Central European winters plants in exposed spots can also be lost to frost. Plant it in well drained soil, leave the dead stems on over winter and cut them back in spring, and mulch lightly in cold places. In rich soil or part shade it grows tall and flops. It is slow to establish, so water it regularly in the first year.
