What it's good for, and what it isn't

This compact ornamental grass works well in small groups, mixed perennial borders or a large container. Soft bottlebrush flower heads appear in late summer, and the dry foliage adds winter texture. Give it a sunny, well-drained position and cut back the old stems in spring.

Watch out for
Winter waterlogging and prolonged summer drought can cause damage; supplementary watering may be needed during extended hot weather. Published hardiness ratings differ substantially, so winter protection is particularly important in cold, exposed positions and containers. Older clumps can develop a bare centre and may need division to rejuvenate them. The species can self-seed: its first escape in Hungary was described in 2020 along a road in Budapest. It is not on the official invasive lists (the EU list names its relative Pennisetum setaceum); if you do not want seedlings, cut off the plumes before the seed ripens.
