Gypsophila repens
Creeping baby's breath (Gypsophila repens) is a ground cover plant. Light: full sun. Hardy down to -40 °C. Drought tolerance: high. Sold in local shops from about HUF 1,400.
A dwarf alpine cousin of the tall baby's breath: it makes a grey-green, narrow-leaved cushion 10 to 20 cm tall that is covered in a cloud of tiny starry pink or white flowers in early summer. It suits wall tops, rock gardens, gravel beds and edges, where the stems tumble nicely over stone, and it positively likes poor, limy soil. Give it sun and good drainage, because standing water in winter rots it, and trim it lightly after flowering to keep it dense.
