What it's good for, and what it isn't

This hybrid snowberry is an almost indestructible, dense shrub with arching branches: its tiny, inconspicuous flowers are popular with bees and are followed from late summer by white, pearly or lilac-pink berries that stay on the stems long after the leaves have dropped. It is sold as 'Magic Berry', 'Mother of Pearl' and 'White Hedge'; it grows in sun or part shade in almost any soil, tolerates drought and city air, and also makes a good low hedge. It slowly spreads by suckers and forms a thicket, so plant it where that does no harm, or pull the suckers out in winter.

Watch out for
Most cultivars spread by suckers into a dense colony and outgrow their space over time unless the suckers are removed ('White Hedge' hardly suckers). Powdery mildew, leaf spots, rust and aphids may appear but rarely do serious harm. One parent species, common snowberry, escapes from gardens in Central Europe and is on the Swiss list of potentially invasive plants; we found no such listing for the hybrid itself.
