What it's good for, and what it isn't

A low, evergreen, grey-green cushion plant for rock gardens that flowers so heavily in spring that the leaves almost disappear: good on top of walls, on retaining walls, in rockeries and as edging, and it positively likes limy, stony soil. Varieties differ mainly in colour (purple, blue, pink, red, occasionally white); the old purple-blue ones are the toughest, while seed-raised mixes vary in shade. Give it sun and free-draining soil, and trim it back after flowering so it stays dense and does not go bare in the middle.

Watch out for
In heavy, wet soil it rots off in winter and stays short-lived; without trimming, the centre of the cushion goes bare within a few years. Aphids and flea beetles can damage it, and white blister (a disease of the cabbage family) occasionally appears. Self-sown seedlings usually flower paler than the parent.
