Malus domestica
Apple (Malus domestica) is a fruit plant that reaches 4 m × 3.5 m after ten years. Light: full sun. Hardy down to -34 °C. Drought tolerance: medium. Toxic to dogs and cats. Sold in local shops from about HUF 5,000.
The best known garden fruit tree: it is covered in white and pink blossom in spring, and the fruit ripens from late summer to autumn depending on the cultivar. It is sold grafted and the rootstock decides the final size: on a dwarf rootstock it stays 2 to 3 m tall, on a medium-vigour one around 4 m, while a vigorous rootstock gives a large, spreading tree. Most cultivars are not self-fertile, so plant a second cultivar that flowers at the same time (or rely on one next door), and expect regular pruning and plant protection.
