What it's good for, and what it isn't

A low stonecrop that forms a tight cushion of fleshy, toothed leaves, covers itself in yellow starry flowers in summer and keeps its leaf rosettes through mild winters. It is mostly sold in the variegated form with cream-yellow margins that blush pink in cool weather, but plain green forms exist too. It looks best in sun yet puts up with light shade and moister soil better than most stonecrops, as long as it never sits in standing water.

Watch out for
The crown rots easily in dense soil that stays wet in winter. In rich soil it stretches and flops open, and the variegated form occasionally throws a green shoot that is best pinched out. In hard winters it drops its older leaves.
