What it's good for, and what it isn't

A low subshrubby bramble that behaves like a herbaceous perennial: the prickly shoots die back in winter and resprout from the ground, with large white flowers in summer and strawberry-sized glossy red fruit from August. The fruit is more showy than tasty: sweetish but bland raw, better cooked into jam or syrup. It is fully hardy and fruits on its own, but it runs strongly underground, so plant it only where you can fence it in. Cut all shoots to the ground in spring.

Watch out for
It spreads aggressively by underground runners and root suckers, forming a dense prickly colony within a few years and coming up in neighbouring beds. Plant it behind a root barrier sunk at least 40 cm deep, in a bed enclosed by edging or paving, or in a large tub, and dig out stray shoots every year. The shoots are prickly, so wear gloves for picking. It is susceptible to honey fungus and can be attacked by raspberry cane borers.
