What it's good for, and what it isn't

A low, tidy deciduous shrub with arching stems that is almost hidden under pure white, lightly scented flower clusters in late spring. It suits the front of a border, a low informal flowering hedge or a large pot; the even lower, spreading 'Nikko' is the form most often sold. It flowers on last year's wood, so prune it straight after flowering and thin out the oldest stems every few years.

Watch out for
Late spring frost regularly damages the early shoots and flower buds, especially in low-lying frost pockets; flowering is then poor or the flowers stay tiny. In full sun and high summer heat the foliage can bleach, so in hot, dry places in Central Europe it does better with afternoon shade and watering in dry spells. Stems are short-lived and dead wood has to be cut out every year. Aphids, leaf miners and leaf spot are occasional and rarely serious.
