What it's good for, and what it isn't

A low pink that forms loose evergreen mats and is covered for weeks from early summer with small magenta, pink or white flowers. Plant it in sun in lean, sandy or gritty, well-drained soil: it suits rock gardens, edgings and the tops of walls, and shearing after bloom keeps it dense. It seeds itself around, while the centre of old mats can go bare after a few years, so divide and replant now and then.

Watch out for
Crown rot kills it in moist, poorly drained soil, especially in winter, and the mat dies out from the centre. Leaf spot can appear in humid summers where plants are crowded. Its wild populations are protected in Hungary, so plant nursery-grown stock only and never collect from the wild.
