Hosta fortunei
Fortune's hosta (Hosta fortunei) is a perennial that reaches 60 cm × 90 cm after ten years. Light: part shade, shade. Hardy down to -40 °C. Drought tolerance: low. Toxic to dogs and cats. Sold in local shops from about €4.90.
The Fortune's hosta group (for example gold-edged 'Aureomarginata' and white-edged 'Francee' and 'Patriot') is a dependable foliage plant for part shade and shade: broad, veined leaves form a dense mound, topped by pale lavender flower spikes in summer. It wants humus-rich soil that stays evenly moist without being waterlogged, and the leaves scorch in hot direct sun. You need to protect it from slugs from spring onwards, and keep in mind that it is toxic to dogs and cats.
