Wisteria sinensis
Chinese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) is a climber. Light: full sun, part shade. Hardy down to -20 °C. Drought tolerance: medium. Toxic to dogs and cats. Sold in local shops from about €15.
Its fragrant, hanging flower clusters suit a sturdy pergola or a substantial support beside a sunny wall, while the summer foliage provides shade. Allow plenty of room and plan to prune twice a year, as thickening stems can damage flimsy supports and gutters. Keep the pods and seeds away from children and pets.
