What it's good for, and what it isn't

A hybrid snowberry of garden origin, sold almost only as the low, sprawling cultivar Hancock for ground cover: barely 50 to 80 cm tall but spreading 2 to 3 metres wide. Its tiny bluish-green leaves make a dense carpet, with insignificant pink flowers in summer and pinkish-red berries in autumn. It is popular because it grows on banks, under trees and in dry shade where little else will. But its branches root wherever they touch the soil, so it keeps on spreading, and it is officially an invasive species, so we do not recommend it for gardens; its berries are mildly poisonous.

We do not recommend this plant

Watch out for
Officially an invasive woody plant. Its arching branches root wherever they touch the soil and it also throws up suckers, so the patch grows every year: a single plant eventually becomes a dense carpet several metres wide, running into the next bed, the lawn edge and lower plants, and it does not stop at the garden boundary. The rooted shoots become independent plants, which makes it hard to push back later; the edges need cutting back regularly and rooted branches have to be pulled out. Hungarian Government Decree 282/2024 (IX. 30.) names it in Annex 2 among the invasive woody plants, so it may not be planted, or used as a replacement, on public-use land; the decree does not ban it in private gardens. Other problems: powdery mildew, leaf spot, scale and aphids can occur, though the cultivar Hancock resists them fairly well.
