What it's good for, and what it isn't

A low, mounded deciduous shrub with aromatic grey-green leaves that covers itself in a haze of blue flowers in late summer and early autumn, when few other shrubs are in bloom, and draws in bees and butterflies. Plant it in full sun in loose, free-draining soil; it handles drought well but not standing water. It flowers on the current year's shoots, so cut it back hard every spring, which also means winter dieback of the stems does no lasting harm.

Watch out for
Winter is its weak point in Central Europe, and wet more than cold: the roots survive to about -23 °C, in free-draining soil even to -27 °C, but in harder winters the stems often die back to the ground and the plant resprouts from the base in spring. On heavy soil that stays wet in winter the crown rots and the shrub dies within a few years, so in clay plant it slightly raised and mulch young plants for their first winters. It leafs out late in spring, so do not give up on it too early; pests are few, with occasional capsid bug damage.
